First Lady Michelle Obama is reportedly wrestling with at least 100 House Democrats who would rather not pass a re-authorization of the nation's school meals program if it means taking money from food stamp recipients.

The Senate approved the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which would increase spending on child nutrition programs by $4.5 billion -- including a 6-cent-per-meal boost to the rate the federal government reimburses school lunch -- but said the only way to fund it without adding to the deficit was to remove $2.2 billion from the food stamp (now known as SNAP) program. Re-authorization of the Child Nutrition Act must now be approved by the House before authorization for the legislation currently in place expires.

The Senate's funding method is a bit like picking the pocket of one panhandler to put it in the hand of another. Yet the mainstream media has hailed these measly 6 cents as the first increase in the subsidized lunch reimbursement rate in three decades -- a false notion.

Apparently, no one in the press has actually bothered to read the rules governing the school meals program. If they had, they'd know that the disputed 6 cents are barely more than what the National School Lunch Program receives automatically each year by way of cost of living increases. This year, in fact, the reimbursement rate has already gone up 4 cents -- from $2.68 per lunch to $2.72 -- thanks to an adjustment in the Consumer Price Index.

Granted, school kitchens are broke and have been for a long time. According to the School Nutrition Association, schools that rely on the federal reimbursements to pay their expenses lose 35 cents on average with every lunch they serve, which helps explain why they feed kids sweetener-stuffed snacks instead of real food in order to comply with the USDA's calorie requirements.

The 6 cent increase would be laughable if it weren't so tragic. But more important in this stalled legislation is a provision that would, for the first time, give the USDA authority to regulate all foods sold in schools, possibly meaning an end -- finally -- to so-called "competitive foods," such as sugary drinks and candy in school vending machines and ice cream bars and fruit rollups in the deli line. That would go a long way toward addressing the obesity epidemic that Michelle Obama has pledged to end.

So I say, Keep your 6 cents. Let the nation's lunch ladies do what they've been doing for years that Congress can't -- live with what they've got. Congress can then continue doing what it does best -- spending money we don't have on wars we don't need. Somehow, the kids will survive.

Yankees What Happened To Our Don?

Joe Torre shockingly announced he will retire from the Los Angeles Dodgers, and hands  the reins to successor Don Mattingly today  with two weeks left in the regular season.

It's a move that caught everyone by surprise considering that the Dodgers may want to interview others such as Tim Wallach, but nevertheless Mattingly is the incoming manager while Torre is nothing but a lame duck on the West Coast.

This offseason is promising to be quite the boiling one when it comes to managers and vacant team openings. As for Joe Torre, where will he end up going next season?

You can bet he'll end up with a big market team with a playoff bound roster that is destined for the World Series. Remember he is retiring from the Dodgers, not baseball, so whether he is or isn't we look at Torre's possible destinations this offseason.

  • Yankees 10, Mariners 0: CC Sabathia hasn't lost at Yankee Stadium in his last 15 regular-season decisions -- he did lose Game 1 of the World Series last year -- and he extended that streak with ease Sunday. Rain prevented him from working into the seventh inning, but it didn't stop Robinson Cano from hitting a grand slam and knocking in a career-high six runs. The Yankees now have 10 grand slams this season. That matches a franchise mark from 1987, when Don Mattingly had six himself. The Yankees are now 12-0 without Alex Rodriguez this season. Rodriguez is on the disabled list for almost another two weeks, so if the Yankees can keep that up, they can probably all but wrap up a playoff spot. Don't hold your breath, though.

  • Pirates 2, Mets 1: Johan Santana has now thrown three straight complete games. Unfortunately, he's lost the last two of them. Zach Duke outdueled his Mets counterpart as the Pirates avoided a sweep. Jose Tabata -- an ex-Yankees prospect -- and ex-Met Lastings Milledge homered for the Pirates runs. A Carlos Beltran sacrifice fly accounted for the Mets run.

Bench Monday: back to school edition...221/365 by ~ cynthiak ~

Back to School Sales Tax Holiday is in August

August is that wonderful time of year when we break off that summer romance, kiss love goodbye and set the alarm clock for back to school days. In August 2007, Americans spent $7.5 billion on family clothing. In case you were wondering, America produces around 9.3 billion pounds of apples each year, with more than half of those apples produced by Washington State. There are 7.1 million teachers in the United States, so that should be plenty for your children to give the teacher and apple on the first day of school.

If you need some financial help with all that back-to-school shopping for the kids, the state sales tax holidays are already scheduled in most states. An excellent resource to learn more about the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday is Associated Content Producer Irene Lynn's article titled: Back-to-School Sales Tax Takes A Holiday.

Buy what you need for the first day of school but don’t buy too much for the rest of the year. Some items, such as pencils and pens, might be useful to stock up on if there is a great sale. But since many stores overstock on items, you may actually be able to find some bargains by scanning for sales after the back to school rush is over.

Did you know

Sports Car Pagani Zonda by gutierrezcars

Nothing beats sitting back drinking a beer and watching the game, especially this time of year when both New York baseball teams are in the playoffs. Just about every bar in town claims to be a sports bar, but only a few truly are. Here is a list of some of the sports bars I have been to that I would recommend.

Scruffy Duffy’s located at 753 8th Avenue (Between 46th and 47th Streets). This is where the after work crowd goes to see the game. They have a half a dozen TV’s including several flat screens and one projection TV. No matter where you turn, you can see the game. They have plenty of beers to choose from and a pool table. It fills up quickly; so unless you get there early don’t expect to get a seat at the bar.

ESPN Zone located at 1472 Broadway right in the heart of Times Square. Well since this place is owned by ESPN, you know you will be able to see just about every game there is. They even have TV’s in the bathroom. However this place tends to be on the pricey side and is very touristy.

Riviera Sports Bar and Café located at 225 West 4th Street. This is the only bar in town where Yankee fans are not welcome. This place is known as a Red Sox bar.

Foley’s New York located at 18 West 33rd Street right next to the Empire State Building. If you love baseball this is the place to be, the entire bar is decorated with baseball pictures and memorabilia. Players from the Mets and Yankees as well as other teams often frequent this place after the game. They have plenty of TV’s and a nice beer selection.

Nevada Smith’s located at 74 3rd Avenue (Between 11th and 12th Street). This is the place to go if you want to watch European Football or soccer for those of us in the states. The crowds really get into the games with their singing and chanting. The games are shown live so the doors open as early as 7:00 AM.

Gin Mill located at 442 Amsterdam Avenue and 81st Street. With over fifteen televisions, there is always a game to watch. This is a great place to go on a Sunday afternoon to watch all the NFL games.

Third and Long located at 523 Third Avenue at 35th Street. A great place to meet after work as the prices are reasonable and there are plenty o TV’s to watch the game.

O’Hanlon’s Bar located at 349 East 14th Street (Between 1st and 2nd Avenue). This place has a good old-fashioned corner bar atmosphere. You can watch the game, play pool or throw darts. There is a distinct Irish flavor to the place and they pour a great pint of Guinness.

Molly Wee located at 402 8th Avenue. Located just outside of Madison Square Garden, if you are going to the game this is great place to meet beforehand. Many people also come in after the game to celebrate a victory or drown their sorrows.

Is it right to love?

There has been a lot of talking lately about the 19th newborn of Duggars' legacy - Josie - and surely most people have been arguing on the greatest question of all: is it right to have so many kids?

People are split among two sides: the "pro-life" one and the "too many, what you think you are doing" one. Can't say they're both wrong: let's see why.

Being part of a great family is something many wish for - or at least they did during their younger years - it means so much fun, to spend holidays with relatives which could easily give you some dollars; you know, just like grandpa and grandma used to when we were kids. That kind of imagery can't sound wrong: problem is, life isn't single faced.
It seems the Duggars can look after their kids, also due to the mature enough older ones doing babysitting to the youngers; but can really love be shared among nineteen kids? I mean, you know how it goes, love doesn't need to be split, but time does; and please don't fool me saying that the Duggars' family works just like a normal one: what do we know about psychological repercussions on the children? We don't have - luckily - many examples of enormous families like this one, and so we can't know what'll happen to this poor kids' minds, being crushed with so much pressure.

On the other hand, it stills remains a fact that free will should be really free for each individual, anywhere in the world. So, for as many things we could say on how they should, or shouldn't behave, they still have the right to do as they want; problem is, is their children's free will respected or what?

As for now we have considered only private matters, but this behaviors have a public side too: in the face of the mounting problem of famine, pollution and depletion of resources, is right for a family of a first-world country to be this large? If you think that the corn to fuel a SUV one time can feed a third-world family for one year, we must think about the cost of an unlimited fertility.

With two kids per family, we can have a stable population, but if every family would trail behind the Duggars'one, in a few generations we would need the Galaxy to home all of us.
